Its area stretches to the whole valley of the Pesa River. On Poggio di Cematura there are the ruins of the most important Etruscan-Roman settlement in the Chianti. In the Middle Age it filled with important castles and in 1200 was part of the Chianti League with Castellina and Gaiole. There are now few remains of the defensive buildings in town; interesting are the Parish of Santa Maria Novella, once the richest one of Chianti, and of San Fedele a Paterno, the Parrocchiale, the Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria and several palaces of 1500.
