The Palazzo del Podestà of Radda in Chianti is reopened to the public after seven years, the historical offices of the council since 1865 and an example of minor Florentine architecture of the Quattrocento.
The restoration and redevelopment of the building, which began in 2001, were done to give the residents and tourists the possibility to visited never-seen-before spaces that had never previously been open to the public.
The old prison cells and new exhibition spaces, with the original structural elements in vaulting and visible fascia stone masonry, therefore return to restore a building located in the heart of one of the most beautiful villages in Chianti.
The Palazzo del Podestà has been reconstructed and extended many times over the course of its history.
The original 15th century building was restored in 1551 with maintenance works to the roof and terrace. The current structure is instead due to works that took place around 1770.
On that occasion, the building’s volume was amplified, with the additional of the second floor and the prison wing, courtyard and the jailer’s house were built. The Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo visited the reconstruction works and he admired the execution and value of the work. For more than four centuries, the building was the place appointed for the administration of justice for the Chianti community.
