On foot but also by bike to discover the beauties of the area. A true itinerary of slow tourism is offered in Poggibonsi for those who love nature, monuments and the remains of the past.
The Council, in partnership with Terre di Siena, Confesercenti, Confcommercio and Ciclosport Porciatti, actually organises some events in July for unusual visits that are far away from the usual tourist parts.
For sports fans or not, there will be a bike ride on 5 July. It will start at 15:30 in Piazza Mazzini 6, at the centre’s headquarters for the tourism services. Cycling lovers will leave for a 2 hour journey in discovery of the city’s outskirts, from hills to unending wheat fields, from woods to fields of sunflowers. The route is suitable for everyone, but you need your own bike.
For those who prefer to walk, there are archaeological and art history trails. The first one (on 19 July, from 21:30) will unveil the secrets of the park of the Fortezza: remains and reconstructions of the Longobard and Carolingian settlements and the medieval castle, with a visit to the bridge house where the war machinery of the Renaissance is kept.
The art trail takes the visitor in discovery of the main monuments in Poggibonsi. It leaves from the Poggio Imperiale, continues to the Fonte delle Fate and passes by castles, churches and museums to the heart of the town with Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Pretorio. It will take place on 12 July (17:30) and 26 July (at night, at 21:30).
All the tours cost 5 Euros. Ask for information or book at the tourist services centre (0577-935113).
