On the right bank of the Elsa River, Poggibonsi has always had a good position thanks to the roads crossing it since the old times. Florence and Siena competed for it, so much that it was even razed to the ground. Its original nucleus can now be found on the hill of Poggio Imperiale. Important farming centre, now also industrial, it offers also interesting buildings: Palazzo Pretorio and the Church of San Lorenzo. In the environs visit the Fonte alle Fate (Fairies’ Spring), Castello di Strozzavolpe ("Castle of Fox-Strangler") and some parish churches. Today it is in the Province of Siena.
