For one entire day, come to Buonconvento and once again live the ancient farming traditions of the past.
Sunday July 20, this small Municipality surrounded by the small ravines of the Crete Val d’Arbia, just a few kilometers from Siena, the people of the village will give life to an evocative historical-cultural commemoration of the threshing of wheat, under the title of “Threshing under the Walls”.
Following the custom of the 1930s and 40s around sixty people dressed in costume and “armed” with machines and tools from the era will reproduce in the streets and alleys, illustrations of peasant life: from the wheat harvest to the spinning of hemp.
In Buonconvento ancient shops will be staged demonstrating some of the ancient crafts that have disappeared today such as rope making, weaving, cobbling, carving of wooden clogs, head farming, basket weaving, knife sharpening and fulling (beating) wool. At twilight, along the three hundred year old wall of the city, as it used to happen at sunset to shake off the fatigue of the day, and following the ancient tradition, the men and women of Buonconvento will set up food stands to enjoy genuine food in the local tradition, drink wine and enjoy traditional dances and games.
The simple and suggestive atmosphere of the “Threshing under the Walls” will be the ideal occasion to rediscover ancient traditions and review a part of the history of the Province of Siena.
